Preparing for Your PAE Consultation: Questions to Ask
A checklist for your first appointment at MIVA Medical — from Kansas City Prostate Center, a MIVA Medical specialty site.
If urinary symptoms from an enlarged prostate have been affecting your daily life, your first consultation is the place to get real answers. A little preparation can help you make the most of that visit.
What to Bring
- A symptom log. Note how often you’re urinating, whether you’re waking up at night, and how urgent or weak your stream feels.
- Prior test results. PSA levels, prior imaging, or urology notes, if you have them.
- A current medication list. Especially any BPH medications you’ve already tried, like alpha-blockers or 5-alpha reductase inhibitors.
- Insurance information. MIVA Medical’s team verifies PAE coverage before scheduling.
Questions Worth Asking
- Based on my symptoms and prostate size, am I a good candidate for PAE?
- Have I tried medication, and did it help?
- What would recovery look like for me specifically?
- How does PAE compare to TURP for someone in my situation?
- What’s the next step if I want to move forward?
What Happens During the Visit
Your consultation typically includes a physical exam, a review of your urinary symptoms using a standardized severity scale, and a conversation about whether PAE or another treatment path fits your goals. There’s no obligation to decide immediately — the visit is about giving you a clear, honest picture of your options.
